Wrong Question, Right Answer

Summary

Tragedies happen every day to people of all walks of life. While the response to these is often to ask, “Why did God allow this to happen?” or simply, “Why, God?” Jesus used two tragedies from his day to direct attention to repentance and faith.

Open the newspaper or watch the news on any given day and you’ll see events similar to those that prompted today’s text:

  • A gunman starts shooting in a workplace and when it’s over, seven people are dead and four others injured.
  • Five are killed in a tornado.
  • A man enters a house, pulls out his girlfriend and their six-year-old daughter and kills both of them before shooting himself.
  • Suicide bombers strike in the Middle East.
  • A traffic accident kills a family of five.

Sadly, the list could go on and on.

In today’s reading, Jesus used two events of untimely death to show that everyone will die, but not everyone has to perish.
