Our Lord is risen, is risen indeed! Everything
about this morning testifies to that fact: the music, the scripture readings,
the floral displays, the general excitement of this very special day. Yes, the
Lord is risen, risen indeed.
Nevertheless, some of you may feel
just a bit let down. You’re perhaps disappointed in the scripture text from
which I’m preaching, this story from the book of Acts. You would have preferred
that I preach today from one of the familiar stories of the first Easter — like
Peter and John entering the empty tomb, or the two disciples with whom Jesus
walked on the road to Emmaus on the late afternoon of the first Easter, or — especially!
— when Mary Magdalene saw our Lord on that resurrection morning. I suspect many
of you would have preferred one of those texts today, and I understand your
feelings.
Furthermore, if you pay attention to
sermon titles (not everybody does!), you may have decided that I’m short on
imagination this Sunday: “Easter Is Today!” Of course it is! This is an
announcement of the obvious. You don’t need me to tell you that Easter is
today.
Well, maybe you do. And maybe I need
to remind myself. So stay with me as I tell you an Easter story.
